Wigan woe ..... again
Sunday 26th October 2008 The Premier League Wigan Athletic 0-4 Aston Villa

Well, well that’s what you get when your full of your own self-importance, the Latics “superstars” tried to boost their next clubs pay packet instead of playing in a team unit similar to when we first arrived in the Premiership, just like the Tigers over on Humberside are doing at this moment in time. Look & learn seems to be the watchword now my friends, look & learn. The travelling fans who didn't fill the North Stand made a helluva din and their team ensured it continued during the rain swept match. After a quiet opening the game imploded against the home side when Titus Bramble slid in on the edge of the area with Agbonlahor the referee Michael Jones didn’t hesitate and awarded a spot kick. Ex-Liverpool target Gareth Barry hit home the penalty as Kirkland dived the right way, Martin O’Neils one hundredth game in charge never seemed to be a sad one after that. Before the disputed spot-kick Heskey & Kapo had half-chances and they were left to rue them, to be fair to Latics did then try to get level quickly as Heskey then Scharner had efforts blocked or saved. Wilson Palacios fired a drive in which Friedel fumbled but Kapo tried to score looking good and hammered the rebound well wide. Steve Bruce decided to bring on Koumas instead of the ineffectual Kapo and the Welshman brought a save out of the impressive Villa keeper. The claret and blues fans favourite John Carew replaced the goalscorer Gareth Barry who went off injured after 54 minutes and the love of lap dancing forward flicked the ball onto an unmarked Agbonlahor who scored when the ball seemed to hit him at the far post. Question, why wasn’t a Latics player on the line covering the posts? Answer on an email to Steve Bruce please. The same two Villa players were involved again for the third as Agbonlahor crossed into the six yard box, Chris Kirkland criminally stayed on his line and left the big Norwegian a simple header for game set & match. Latics had no answer to a bigger, stronger team who played as a team throughout the ninety minutes and Steve Sidwell smacked in a fourth into the top corner as he ran unopposed to the heart of an away day defence. Bad day at the office? If it was then a few of the “superstars” need to find their P45s.

Steve Bruce said . . . . . "We haven't done our jobs defensively For me it was a penalty there are no excuses because Titus should stay on his feet. Again, it was a glaring error of judgment by him. We are all told that you never go to ground when you don't have to in the penalty area, so I've got no complaints. That has been our strength because in the games that we've lost we have lost by the odd goal. Three of the four that we conceded today were so poor defensively and the mistakes were not acceptable at this level. If you do that against a really good Aston Villa side then you have your backsides kicked and we certainly had that today." |
