Quite a bold statement, but who can argue that it isn't true?
The after match fall out from this result has sent shock waves all over the Red half of Liverpool and most of it is put down firmly at the feet of Rafa Benitez and his charges.
This is simply unjustified, Liverpool have played much worse than this on previous visits to Wigan and still come away with at least a point. The written press just will not believe that little old Wigan Athletic are coming of age in the Premier League.
How dare Wigan Athletic win Liverpool! If Latics won, it's because Liverpool were rubbish, so they all blame Benitez, Gillett, Hicks, the loss of Bill Shankly, no 'This Is Anfield' sign at the DW Stadium, the pies, anything, even the straws they're clutching on to.
They won't praise Charles N'Zogbia who was the best player on the field by a country mile. Oh how the Liverpool faithful must have been longing for a player of his quality in their ranks. Emmerson Boyce linked up play with the mercurial Frenchman perfectly and he is Wigan Athletic's SECOND CHOICE right back.
Gary Caldwell and Titus Bramble had arguably their easiest games of the season so far, marshalling Dirk Kuyt and Fernando Torres, who despite reports on Merseyside, were trying to score. And the Reds didn't find life easier down the Latics left flank because Maynor Figueroa was in scintillating form.
The midfield of James McCarthy, touted as the next Wayne Rooney, Mohamed Diame and the wonderful Paul Scharner were outstanding as the midfield battle was won hands down by the home side.
Hugo Rodallega scored a goal that was always coming given Latics' total dominance of proceedings and he was ably assisted by Marcelo Moreno who certainly knows how to put himself about on a football pitch.
I'd like to include Chris Kirkland in this list but unfortunately I can't. Liverpool did not trouble him once! Chris did get a wonderful reception from the travelling fans as he stood in front of them just before the start of the second half, and that was the biggest cheer of the evening from them!
They do like their former heroes at Anfield don't they? Pity they aren't getting fully behind the players of the PRESENT instead of dwelling on the past.
The relatively comfortable victory was orchestrated by Roberto Martinez, a manager certainly destined for a huge managerial career. Steve Gerrard and Carragher helped the referee make most of his decisions as usual, so the Anfield Giants can't even blame Andre Marriner either.
Monday night was the evening when everything seemed to fall into place for Wigan Athletic and it is hard to name a team who could have lived with them on Monday evening. Liverpool need feel no shame at all.
In short Wigan Athletic were the better of the two teams on show and that's why Liverpool lost. |
